CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

WITH JANIE AND BURKE both in the winner’s circle, Natasha wanted footage with Dawson and Kelsey. Kelsey led the little boy up the steps, but then he let go of her hand and ran to... Burke. Hugging his knees. While Janie watched, completely nonplussed, and maybe somewhat pleased, too, Burke swung the boy up and onto his hip. For the footage.

It was over in seconds. Dawson reached for Janie almost the second after Burke had picked him up. And Natasha called “cut.”

Still, Janie had a feeling the moment would be ingrained on her heart forever.

Kelsey wanted Dawson and Janie to go out to dinner with her and her dad to celebrate Burke’s win.

Janie just couldn’t do it. Not because she was sorry he’d won. Not because she begrudged him the win.

But because she was worried sick about Beanie and because Dawson had already been out all day, was tired and starting to unravel.

It might not have appeared that way. But in her heart she knew, as she drove her and her son home midafternoon, that the reasons she’d given the Carter duo had been the full and complete truth.

She wasn’t sorry Burke had won.

Every time she relived the second when Natasha Stevens had called his name, she smiled. It was pretty much the highlight of her day.

Her second-in-a-row, almost-win honorable mention came in closely behind. If nothing else, she now knew that even without schooling or credentials, her recipes, and preparation, were worthy of professional praise.

Maybe, if the worst happened and she didn’t make it to the finals, and then win, she could at least use the honorable mentions to get her recipes out there. And then who knew what could happen?

Realistically, not much, she conceded to herself as she pulled into her drive and glanced in the back at her sleeping son. She’d have to wake him.

Hopefully he’d go right back to sleep and finish his nap. If not, their afternoon did not bode well.

The internet was filled with superb recipes that were completely free. Where once she could have hoped for a cookbook sale to a major publisher to make her a lot of money, that avenue was pretty much less a possibility than a win on Family Secrets.

She’d had a text from Cor. And one from Joe, too. They were at the hospital in Chicago. No one knew anything. Beanie had been taken into surgery to relieve pressure on her brain. Other injuries were not even being tended to unless she made it through the first procedure. Then they’d reevaluate.

No one in the family had seen her.

It was going to be a long night.

For all of them.

* * *

BURKE DEBATED WHETHER or not to call Janie for about five seconds after Kelsey was in her room for the night.

He didn’t want to rub in his win. Most particularly when he’d pretty much figured how much winning the final competition on Family Secrets would ease the burdens in her life. Next to a cure for Down syndrome, he figured she probably didn’t think anything could help more.
